26th March 2017 – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At the Band’s Annual General Meeting the Committee was elected as follows :

Steve Dias (Chairman, Treasurer & Contest Secretary); Ruth Lowe (Secretary); Derek Glendinning (Assistant MD); Gillian Evans (Librarian); Bruce Douglas; Luke Searle.

The following annual awards were presented :

Player of the Year – Bruce Douglas (Solo Euphonium)

Young Player of the Year – Luke Searle (First Horn)

Bandsperson of the Year – Gillian Evans (Solo Cornet & Librarian)

A presentation was made to out-going Chairman, Kate Douglas. 

 

24th May 2016 – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At the Band’s Annual General Meeting the Committee was elected as follows :

Player of the Year – Gillian Evans (Solo Cornet & Librarian)

Young Player of the Year – William Douglas (Solo Trombone)

Bandsperson of the Year – Derek Glendinning (Soprano Cornet & AMD)

The appointment of Graham Chambers as Musical Director of the Band was confirmed.

 

26th January 2016 – MD FOR AREA CONTEST

Following Alan Duguid’s decision to leave the Band at the end of 2015, we are delighted to announce that Graham Chambers will be rehearsing the Band in preparation for the forthcoming Area Contest at Stevenage and will conduct the Band at the Contest.

28th February 2015 – WORKSHOP WITH DAVID HIRST

As part of its preparation for the forthcoming Area Contest, the Band held a full-day workshop with David Hirst. David spent the day working with the Band on Kevin Norbury’s “Variations On Maccabeus” finishing with a full performance of the piece. This was a wonderful experience for all the Band members who had a most enjoyable and rewarding day.

 

23rd November 2014 – LBBA OPEN CONTEST

In its first contest outing under new Professional Conductor Alan Duguid, the Band earned a creditable 8th place from adjudicator Stan Lippeatt for its performance of James Curnow’s Trittico at the LBBA contest in Loughborough.

 

14th October 2014 – DAVID BARON

It is with great sadness that the Band has received news of the death of David Baron.

David was Musical Director of the Band from 1974 to 1983 during which time he led the Band to victory in the Third Section of the London & Southern Counties Regionals and took the Band to the National Finals on three occasions – in 1976 in the 3rd Section and in 1977 and 1981 both in the 2nd Section. Between 1992 and 1996 David also took the Band to contests on a number of occasions.

Away from the contest platform and amongst numerous concerts, under David’s leadership the Band made two European tours, featured on BBC Radio programmes (“Friday Night Is Music Night”, “Listen To The Band” and “Bandstand”), was the subject of an Anglia TV documentary (“The Garden City Sound”), recorded an LP and played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at Hatfield House.

The members of the Band send their condolences to David’s family.

 

21st September 2014 – APPOINTMENT OF NEW PROFESSIONAL CONDUCTOR

The Welwyn Garden City band is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Duguid as Professional Conductor. Alan will work alongside Derek Glendinning to develop the band going forward. Alan Duguid

A native of Aberdeen, Alan graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama after studying composition with Dr Gordon McPherson and Rory Boyle and conducting with Alasdair Mitchell. In 2001 he won the Scottish heat of the NABBC Conductor Competition, going on to represent Scotland at the NABBC finals in 2003. More recently, he reached the quarter final of the 2011 European Conductor Competition in Montreux and led Regent Brass to the London & Southern Counties area title in 2013. Alan is currently also the Musical Director of championship section Redbridge Brass. 

Alan said “I am delighted to take up this position with a band that has such a large amount of potential. I have really enjoyed my first couple of rehearsals with them and look forward to helping them regain their First Section status as soon as possible”. 

Band Chairman, Kate Douglas, said: “This is a very exciting appointment in the Band’s 80th anniversary year. Alan’s excellent conducting skills and positive energy are just what we need to help the Band move up the rankings and back into the First Section”.

 

21st July 2014 – ARTHUR WADDINGTON & ROD FRANKS

It is with great sadness that the Band has received news today of the deaths of Arthur Waddington and Rod Franks.

Arthur had been a regular member of the Band on baritone, horn and cornet for a number of years. His failing health led to him having to give up playing only a few months ago.

As our Professional Advisor, Rod had trained, conducted and played with the Band on numerous occasions over the past decade, most recently last Christmas sitting on the Front Row.

The members of the Band send their condolences to both families.

 

29th May 2014 – COLIN HILLS

It is with great sadness that the Band has received news of the death of Colin Hills.

Colin first played with the Band as a teenager in the late 1970s and on many occasions thereafter over the intervening years including on the Band’s 70th Anniversary CD in 2004.

The members of the Band send their condolences to Colin’s family.
